Revathi is in the South Indian Classical (Carnatic) tradition, based on the raga (scale) of the same name. This musical gateway to Carnatic music employs many of the conventions of the style, both in its rhythmic precision and energetic movement. Students will find the 7/8 rhythmic patterns both exciting to play and accessible when understood in its 3+4 context. This piece will prove to be an exhilarating contrast in many concert programs, while expanding musical horizons with authenticity.

Director’s Notes - 

• The percussion part is a foundation. Percussionists maybe be added to reinforce the pattern on different hand drums or toms in an effort to recreate authentic Carnatic drums. Similarly, since this is an improvisational style, performers may use multiple tones or add flares to enhance the musical performance.

• In Carnatic tradition, the beginning section is often improvised. Instead of playing as a section, the violin parts may be divided among up to four individuals, with each section modified with extra notes, different rhythms, and ornamentations.

• Ornamentations (gamakas) are preferred, as they are part of an authentic Carnatic musical experience, but may be left out by less advanced players.
