Inspired by Walt Witman’s poem, “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d”, this piece is earthy and lyrical with numerous opportunities for students to create expressive musical moments. The melody is shared by all parts of the orchestra throughout the piece and it contains a violin 3 part that doubles the viola in treble clef. Challenges for the students include alternating sharps/flats, occasional high-threes for the upper strings, and a short chromatic line in the middle section
