Saturday Play is a piece included in a group of pieces designed to instruct young players about various musical elements, styles, rhythms and time signatures that will comprise a series entitled Memories From a Child’sLife. An energetic piece, Saturday Play has full implementation of the time signature 6/8 that is less prominent in music for young players. The fast and short main melody presented in the first violin is to depict a childexpressing great joy on a Saturday where there is no school and a free day to play! The middle section expresses freedom to run, explore, and pursue an adventure out in the open, clear air amid beautiful weather.
Also introduced is the expression sfz, indicating a strong and weighty accent that would mostly appear in music written by such composers like Beethoven or Schubert. This expression is yet another element that seems to be less utilized in writing for young groups, but is used here to train young players for higher level repetoire. Late middle school or early high school players will enjoy this fast paced and lively string orchestra work that gives melody to each section!.
