"Ready, set, go" to all those moving towards achieving a goal! Strike the Mark is an upbeat piece intended to describe the energy needed to push forward in hitting a target, staying motivated, or simply choosing to stay positive in all areas of life. This simple yet fun, energetic piece will entertain the young string player, while teaching early skills of rhythm, such as quarters and eighths. The driving, repeated eighth notes at the beginning and end of phrases give it the character of the piece's name. Also introduced is the expression sfz, indicating a strong and weighty accent that would mostly appear in music written by such composers like Beethoven or Schubert. This expression is yet another element that seems to be less utilized in writing for young groups, but is used here to train young players for higher level repetoire. Late middle school or early high school players will enjoy this fast paced and lively string orchestra work that gives melody to each section!.
