A depiction of a cold, snowbound winter scene. I wrote this just after I finished a little piece called Summer Song – for balance I suppose! Winter Scene originally started life as a guitar piece but I expanded it in several ways when casting it for wind band. Without looking for specific imagery, I had in my head something like the snowbound scenes found in the Renaissance art of Pieter Breugel the Elder d. 1569. The music begins with some icy dissonance in the brass before the slow processional of the tune is first stated. There is some contrasting material in the middle which changes colour and key before the main theme returns with its slightly acerbic accompaniment.
